8th grade Latin students with teacher Mag Davis look forward each year to one special day - Gladiator Day! After studying that aspect of ancient Roman culture, students spend some class time making themselves swords, shields and armor out of cardboard, and then taking each other on in 'combat.' In a single elimination tournament of short rounds, this year's battle took place on the outdoor basketball court, and other Middle Schoolers were invited to serve as spectators, who also help determine the outcome of each gladiator pair's battle with cheering and an occasional thumbs up. The victor this year was Duncan H-L, whose large, sturdy shield helped him repel his opponents.
