This past weekend, the TFS Science Olympiad team participated in the Flint Hill Invitational Science Olympiad tournament. The following 28 TFS students competed in the tournament: Emory G (12), Mary R (12), Sawyer R (12), Bailey W (12), Maggie W (12), John B (11), Luna B (11), Ty B (11), Eli C (11), Oscar D (11), Bea G (11), Julia G (11), Kavi M (11), Elijah M (11), Will M (11), Jack M (11), Owen S (11), Sofia S (11), Addie T (11), Hayes B (10), Henry C (10), Jude G (10), Miles G (10), Otis H (10), Jack J (10), Lucy L (10), Elisabeth S (10), and Nati Y (10).
27 teams representing 15 schools from across Virginia, DC, and Maryland competed in this tournament, which was hosted and run by Flint Hill School in Oakton, VA. Because invitational tournaments are not official tournaments, schools participating at them are opting to challenge themselves with a tournament experience before the official tournaments are held. Such schools traditionally have very competitive programs and the roster of schools at this tournament was no different. Notably, 6 of the top 10 schools in the 2024 Virginia State Science Olympiad Tournament were present (Langley HS, Fairfax HS, Woodson HS, BASIS McLean, & Lake Braddock SS), making the level of competition comparable to a state-level tournament.
Medals were awarded to 1st-5th place in each event and trophies were awarded to 1st-3rd place overall school performance. TFS earned medals in 8 events at this tournament and overall performed very well. 2nd place medals were earned in Optics (Luna B, Addie T) and Robot Tour (John B, Owen S). 3rd place medals were earned in Wind Power (Oscar D, Jack M). 4th place medals were earned in Entomology (Ty B, Will M), Helicopter (Mary R, Addie T), and Write It Do It (Lucy L, Elisabeth S). 5th place medals were earned in Electric Vehicle (Owen S, Bailey W) and Tower (Henry C, Elijah M). Overall, the top TFS team earned 12th out of 27, a strong showing for such a small school against such powerhouse programs!
The teams represented TFS well and showed that they can stand toe-to-toe with some of the best. The next tournament will be the Virginia Tech Invitational on February 1, 2025, which will serve as a final check-in before the official regional tournament on February 8, 2025 (hosted at TFS). The road to the official regional is half way done, so there is more work to do, but the season is off to a fantastic start!
