Yesterday, seven Tandem Friends Upper School students went with teachers Doug Brown and Christine Hirsh-Putnam to Richmond for the General Assembly's 2017 Conservation Lobby Day. They attended a live assembly session regarding changes to freedom of assembly laws, met with Delegate David Toscano, and more.
Students from the Environmental Science class and the Tandem Earth Committee attended the Conservation Lobby Day in Richmond sponsored by the Virginia Conservation Network. Prior to speaking to our elected representative, students researched and prepared letters on various topics from maintaining funding for agricultural best management practices and storm water runoff to transparency concerning fracking fluids. In addition, students had the opportunity to watch the discussion and vote on Senate Bill 1055. It was a timely discussion in light of the recent marches around the country.
Students who attended were Javon Carter, Craig Epstein, Meridith Frazee, Chris Goode, Jeremy Odrich, Emma Passino, and James Peacock. They spoke in morning meeting of how exciting it was to attend an aeembly session, and how empowering it felt to discuss important conservation issues with their legislator.
