The community support was incredible last night. At Peabody, the bleachers were full of Tandem green - so many people Badgered up and came to cheer on their squads! Back in the Den, there was not an empty seat in the house, and the energy gave a big boost to the players as they gave it their all!

What a day for Tandem Athletics... and the Music Department! DID YOU SEE THE WINTER CONCERT!!?? Acoustics, vocal ensembles, rock, jazz... WOW! BRAVO! My mind was truly blown.

Congratulations to all Badgers on a tremendous start to the basketball season. Enjoy the holidays, stay active, and we'll see you in the Den in 2025. Badger Up!

Four Games on One Night - 12/20/24
    Varsity Boys

Seeing his teammate on the ground, Shaan sprinted to the scorers table.  He took a knee, and got himself mentally ready to enter the game.  Tandem led 45-43 with 2:40 to go in the 4th Quarter, and points had been hard to come by.  Tandem's offense featured lots of lengthy, intentional, half court possessions - shortening the game and waiting for a quality shot.  Sin swung the ball to Quis at the top of the key, who made a beautiful entry pass to Sean on the block.  He took a hard jab step towards the middle, and two defenders went with him. That left Shaan open in the corner, and Sean alertly kicked it out to him. 2:20 to go.

During practice, Shaan is constantly working on his ball handling and shooting form.  He has been gaining confidence - and he had already drained a key three in the first period. 2:10 to go. Shaan caught the ball in his shooting pocket, bent his knees, and launched a high arching shot towards the rim. In the bleachers, the Tandem crowd rose to their feet as the ball swished through the net!  Tandem took a 5 point lead, the decibel level in the building reached a crescendo, and Sam called a quick timeout as he ran out onto the floor to hype up this epic squad!

That play might've ended it, but Wakefield put together a 5-0 run.  Despite excellent defense from Quis, Wakefield hit a tough three and then a mid range jumper. They got one more possession late in the game, attacked the basket, and the ball rimmed out.  Overtime!

It was an exciting week for basketball as the Varsity Girls logged their first win of the season over St. Michael's, 33-22. Tessa scored 23 points! The Middle School teams had a double header at CDS and JV/Varsity Boys play Stuart Hall here tomorrow and then are at KAA on Saturday.

Badgers Give It Their All: Epic Middle School Double Header on the Road! - 12/13/24

With a lightning quick crossover move that left her opponent dazed at the top of the key, Annie weaved through the defense to the right block.  By that point in the game, she had established herself as quite the floor general.  So, as usual, she drew a lot of CDS defensive attention everywhere she went. Annie used her pivot foot to step around a double team, and made a precision bounce pass to Hadley up the baseline. Hadley, who had positioned herself in the corner, stepped into her jump shot, held her follow through, and knocked in a critical jumper! Swish!  The Badgers trailed by two early in the fourth, 16-14. On the defensive end, Raquel forced a difficult shot and Zuri got the rebound, outletting the ball to Hadley who was picking up steam! She proceeded to take the ball the length of the floor, leaving defenders in the dust, and cashing in a lay-up that tied the game. CDS was forced to call a timeout.

The fourth quarter kept everyone on the edge of their seats, and the Badgers were up to the task.  Annie put the team on her back, driving the ball to the basket, and often enduring some hard fouls.  In total, Annie went to the foul line eight times in the second half, showing incredible toughness and scoring several of her team-high nine points at the stripe. With unprecedented leadership ability, she was super clutch down the stretch as the final minutes featured both teams over the foul limit, lots of jump balls and an incredible level of intensity.

Basketball is in full swing! Our varsity boys won in lopsided fashion this week at home against WCDS while the Middle School Girls played a tight match on the road with Covenant. The Varsity girls play their home opener this evening vs RMA in the Badger Den!

Three Point Barrage: Varsity Badgers Earn Big Win in the Den! - 12/4/24

With Sin representing Tandem at a prestigious Student Diversity Conference in Colorado, Mason was pressed into duty for his first start of the season. Only fifteen seconds into the game, Amir swung the ball to Mason on the wing.  With his feet square to the basket, Mason did not hesitate. He shot the ball with the kind of confidence that only comes from hard work and repetition. The bench leapt to their feet as Mason's three point shot squeezed its way through the twine - a perfect swish to open our first December home game in the Badger Den!

Determined to control the pace, Tandem came out with full court pressure, keeping the action in front of them.  On the rare occasion WCDS was able to get into the front court, they ran into elite man to man defense. An absolute pest, Quis was locked in on the defensive end. He rotated over from the opposite side to block a shot in the first quarter, and went on to have five steals throughout the game, simply picking the pocket of his very frustrated opponent.

While there were no games this week, there was much practice action in the gym for all of our winter teams. You can catch our JV and Varsity boys' teams playing scrimmages at Charlottesville High School on Monday, November 25, with JV tipoff at 6pm and Varsity at 7pm. Then on Tuesday night at 6:30 pm in the gym, our Varsity boys will take on the Alumni team assembled by Gordon Fields in the annual Alumni vs Varsity game. All three of those games should be great to watch! Come cheer on the Badgers - or the alums!

Yesterday, parents received this email about spring sports offerings - while it may seem early, I'd love to start getting a sense of interest and potential roster sizes. If your student is interested in playing a spring sport, please send me an email to sign up at dlevy@tandemfs.org. Include their name, grade and the sport they want to play.

    Go Badgers!

After last week's excitement, this was a week of settling as our winter sports teams (basketball) began their regular practice schedules. Our varsity volleyball and cross country teams held end-of-season celebrations to cap off great team and individual performances. The JV and varsity basketball boys will play in scrimmages this afternoon against Appalachian Christian, with the JV tipoff at 4:30pm and the varsity tipoff at 6pm. There are no games for any teams next week. Hope to see you in the gym!

Fall athletes - please return your uniforms to me ASAP so that you will not be billed for them.
